St. George is a barrier island just off of the coast in Northwest Florida along the panhandle in the Gulf of Mexico. This 22-mile long barrier island is said to have some of the quietest and amazing beaches in the entire state. One of the biggest draws to the island is that the beaches remain quiet while the building codes remain strict. You will not find a lot of high-rise buildings or a ton of commercialization on Saint George. The island allows for a true relaxing Florida beach getaway.

Shopping

Though St. George is small and full of unspoiled beaches, there are plenty of local boutique shops full of handmade treasures, jewelry, fun souvenirs, beachwear, and much more. You could even pick a unique piece of art from some of the local art galleries along the island.

Fishing

Saint George has amazing fishing spots that fishermen of all levels and expertise enjoy, from the angling pro to the very beginner. Some of the species of fish you can expect to catch off the island include sheepshead, flounder, redfish, speckled trout, whiting, and tripletail. Fishing in the waters off the Gulf of Mexico you can catch snapper, grouper, amberjack, seabass, mackerel, mahi-mahi, cobia, and even some sharks.

There are several great fishing spots both on the inlet side facing the mainland and on the southern Gulf of Mexico shores. You can fish from the shore or skim the flats, or even charter a boat, or bring your own boat.

Enjoy a Meal

There are some amazing great local restaurants available on St. George Island and several of them offer the most amazing fresh local seafood. Sit and relax at some of the most beautiful dining venues you’ve ever seen overlooking the Gulf. Enjoy a formal meal or take in a casual and relaxing one at one of the local pubs or cafés. A local favorite is the Island Pizzeria.

Biking

Biking is one of the most popular activities to enjoy on Saint George Island. There are 6 miles of paved paths along Gulf Beach Drive which is the island’s main road that will get you anywhere on the island you care to stop. In addition, there are several other opportunities to enjoy biking all around the island, including a ride to Saint George Island State Park where you can explore several awesome trails.

Outdoor Adventure

Of course, the best activities in Saint George are enjoying the outdoor atmosphere. St. George State Park is probably the most popular spot for enjoying nature on Island. St. George State Park is home to 9 miles of undeveloped shoreline with amazing dunes and Bay Forest as well as salt marshes.

Explore the hiking trails on foot or by bike. Some people even like to horseback ride. There are boardwalks for strolling and plenty of spots to just watch local wildlife or take a dip in the water.

Local festivals and events

Saint George is a small community and there are a handful of people who live on the island year-round. This tight-knit community hosts a variety of fun local events every year. One of the most fun and anticipated events is the annual Chili Charity Cook-Off that brings in about 5000 amazing chili chefs in the spring. The summer and fall usually bring in music charity events including Rock by the Sea Festival.
