Dog Island is a barrier island just off the northwestern Florida Gulf Coast on the panhandle in an area known as the Forgotten Coast. It is located across the water from Carrabelle Florida in Franklin County. The island partly shelters what is known as Saint George Sound and Apalachicola Bay. It is the easternmost island in a chain of barrier islands along the coast of the panhandle of Florida. Other barrier islands near to Dog Island include Saint Vincent Island, Cape Saint George Island, and Saint George Island.

Dog Island is relatively small encompassing only 6.8 miles in length, and it’s only accessible by boat, ferry, or small airplane. The majority of Dog Island is owned by the Nature Conservancy and some parts are privately-owned residential properties. Dog Island is very quiet allowing for the most serene of Florida Island living or vacationing. The island is also home to one small hotel accessed by passenger ferry out of Carrabelle on the mainland, the Pelican Inn, which is home to just eight oceanfront studios and loaded with tons of character. Some residents and regulars have given Dog Island the nickname of ”The Island that Time Forgot.” There are roughly only 100 locals who live on the island and call it their peaceful sanctuary.

Fun things to do on Dog Island

Dog Island is especially popular amongst those with small sailing boats. It is good to make sure you have a quality chart with you if this is your first time sailing or boating around Dog Island. There are several spots around the island where the average depth is just 12 to 18 feet deep, but there are many shallow spots and shorts in the waters of Apalachicola Bay that need to be avoided by several types of boats. Just a quarter-mile off the north shore of Dog Island the water is deeper, averaging about 20 to 25 feet and affords for great sailing.

The west end of Dog Island is home to amazing swimming spots provided by gunk holes. This is a very popular spot for swimming, picnics, and just strolling along the beach, as well as fishing or reading a light novel while enjoying the white sugar in a very quiet location. It is a beloved island to get away and feel like you are in a deserted piece of paradise for a little while.
