About Carrabelle Florida

Carrabelle is a small town located in northwest Florida on the panhandle, just a few hours south of Tallahassee in an area known as the Forgotten Coast. Its neighbor to the east is the town of Apalachicola, what some might consider the most notable of Forgotten Coast towns. Carrabelle sits on the mouth of the Carrabelle River. The official town boundaries of Carrabelle are just over 5 ½ square miles.

Home of the World’s Smallest Police Station

The World’s Smallest Police Station is located in Carrabelle. This tiny police station was established on March 10, 1963 due to the city having a large problem with tourists making unauthorized long distance phone calls on the police phone. This phone was in a call box bolted to a building along the highway. The phone was moved, but calls continued. In addition to this problem, police officers were getting drenched while trying to man incoming calls. The remedy to the problem was to put the police phone in an old telephone booth. This became the new Carrabelle Police Station.

The station is pretty famous and has been featured on several television shows including Ripley’s Believe It or Not, The Today Show, and The Tonight Show. It was also featured in a movie. Today visitors can purchase special police station souvenirs.

Camp Gordon Johnston World War II Museum

Across from the public beach and admission is free. The museum is named after Colonel Gordon Johnston who was an American soldier that served in the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American War, and World War I.

Crooked River Lighthouse

The lighthouse is 2 miles outside of the town limits. It was built in 1895 and can be found just outside of the Carrabelle Beach RV Park. This is the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast at 103 feet tall. The lighthouse is currently home to a museum and gift shop.

The Marina

Carrabelle offers a great waterfront area with full-service marina. There are several great opportunities to take a fishing charter or other water charter. It is also a great spot to house your own boat.

Schools in Carrabelle Florida

The public schools that serve the youngest residents of the town of Carrabelle are part of the Franklin County School District. This is a very small district with just a handful of schools. Most children in Carrabelle attend the Franklin County K-!2 School located in the neighboring town of Eastpoint, Florida.
