Mexico Beach is a small town along the Gulf Coast on the panhandle of northwest Florida in an area known as the Forgotten Coast. The town of Mexico Beach neighbors Port St. Joe and is most recognized for its picturesque beach cottages and white sand beaches. The town prides itself on being one of the last remaining coastal towns that is not overly commercial. It is full of friendly people as well as unspoiled natural beauty.
The Mexico Beach city limits cover four miles of coastline along Highway 98. Anywhere you go within the town limits you are never more than about a half a mile from the amazing pristine beaches. All you need is a good pair of walking shoes or a bike to experience and enjoy all that Mexico Beach has to offer. Image by @h.leschmann via Twenty20
Nobody really knows how far back the beginnings of Mexico Beach go. It is rumored that this coastal area was first settled by Caribbean Pirates as a hideaway from bounty hunters in the early 19th century (1800s). Some of the oldest residents even tell tales of piles of treasure being stashed and hidden from thieves that are still not found today.
The furthest back documented history that pertains to Mexico Beach dates back to around 1920 when the Florida Department of Transportation built scenic Highway 98. The area of Mexico Beach was purchased by Felix DuPont for the purpose of farming it. He ran a successful pine tree farm for several years for the purpose of producing turpentine. In 1946 he sold the land to investors that formed the Mexico Beach Corporation.
Today it is a beloved area of the Forgotten Coast that publications such as Southern Living have deemed “Panhandle Paradise.”
The beach in Mexico Beach really is the favorite spot in town for pretty much anyone who lives or visits here. When the shore is described as perfect white sand, it really truly is just that. The sand on the beach has only one ingredient, as opposed to the several others you will find in typical beach sand. Mexico Beach sand is only made up of evenly sized quartz crystals. The white quartz sand is highly reflective and keeps the shore cool all year long, even in the super high temperatures of summer. Come and enjoy playing in the amazing sand, shelling, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, and more.
Mexico Beach is home to the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association. There are about 200 reefs in the water just off the coast of Mexico Beach. It is an amazing destination for scuba diving and snorkeling. In addition to the reefs are a number of fascinating shipwrecks.
This 2,000-mile-long trail connects 510 wildlife viewing areas. Mexico Beach is a stop along this nature lover’s trail.
Mexico Beach is home to some of the best and most friendly local restaurants with some of the most amazing freshly cooked seafood and homestyle meals. One of the favorite spots for seafood is Killer Seafood. For a morning jolt in a comforting atmosphere, stop by Caribbean Coffee.
Mexico Beach has a nice collection of home styles to choose from, even though it is a pretty small town. In Mexico Beach, you can find low-maintenance condos, small starter homes, moderate-sized single-family homes, cute beachside cottages, and impressive estate homes. Home prices in Mexico Beach range from the mid $200,000s to $1.5 million.
