Panacea is a town along the Forgotten Coast area located on the panhandle in Northwest Florida. You can find this town just off of coastal Highway 98. The word Panacea means "cure-all" and was named for its world-famous Panacea Mineral Springs in the 19th century where the elite from all over the world would travel to experience the healing waters of the springs.
Panacea is now no longer recognized as the cure-all place of healing waters but is considered a nature lover’s paradise. Many who love Panacea say that the town has maintained it's old Florida feel and that you can enjoy a slower pace of life here and almost take a step back into the past. The old Florida feel is something many people treasure, especially those who live in the state and want to enjoy a sort of Florida staycation.
In addition to the famous restorative waters of the springs, Panacea has a rich Maritime history that has been shaped by several generations of proud families. Some who still work on the waters today. There is a lot of pride in the Maritime history of Panacea and families that still work the waters in this town practice the time-honored tradition of their family's traditions of boat building, shrimping, crabbing, and fishing. At the Big Bend Maritime Center, visitors can learn about the Maritime history of Panacea and even learn how to build a boat.
From the dock, you can take in breathtaking views of Dickerson Bay. The Rock Landing dock is where commercial and sport fisherman bring in their daily catch. These catches can include blue crab, oysters, pink and white shrimp, millet, trout, and grouper. Many of the local restaurants will purchase this fresh and amazing seafood to serve to the lucky diners in their establishment. Every year, the dock is home to the amazing Blue Crab Festival on the first Saturday of May. It is also home to the Mighty Mullet Maritime Festival that happens every fall.
The welcome center is located just off of Highway 98 near Dickerson Bay. This is a fun stop for many to browse the displays and old photographs as well as artifacts and artwork of Panacea's history. It is also a great place to book a local nature-guided tour or a charter boat to enjoy some of the best maritime activities that have been part of Panacea’s history.
The Gulf Specimen Marine Lab and Aquarium
This aquarium has been in Panacea since 1963. It is 8500 ft.² of interior exhibition and program space that houses approximately 30,000 gallons of seawater as well as 1000 ft.² of pavilion space. There are touch tanks and educational displays spread among three buildings and a 300-foot dock culture system. The aquarium houses hundreds of species of local marine life using educational and research purposes for programs at universities, aquariums, and museums across the country. The aquarium opened to the public in 1990 with a major renovation in 1997, in 2001 they debuted the exhibit Hidden Life, the Plankton of the Sea. A few other exhibits have been introduced to aquarium visitors since then. It is a fun place to get a little bit of hands-on education about the sea life of Panacea and surrounding areas.
